A study recently showed that antioxidant therapy may interfere with ovulation in female mice. It displayed the fact that a certain amount of reactive oxidative stress (that which antioxidants help ‘clean up’ in the body) is required for proper ovulation. Now lets take this with a grain of salt, as we should all scientific research, as they are usually done on mice or in a vacuum that ignores the whole of reality. That said, this should be cause for minor alarm, as once again, relying on western based thinking methodology, if someone says something is good for us, we over-do it (i.e. if vitamin C is good for the immune system, let’s take a whole bunch of it!).
A conclusion that should be considered is this; when we take any condition that involves a human that presents a lack of homeostasis (physiological balance), and try to balance them with man made isolations of specific aspects of nature, we run the risk of creating further imbalance, thus making things worse, not better.
This argument gives great strength to the concept of living life with greater accountability. Meaning; eat better, exercise, rest and sleep adequately, reduce stress, and enjoy life. These are all (for the most part) in your control, a choice you can consciously make. This is the level of accountability that people need to take in regards to their health, otherwise, with populations growing rapidly, our already stressed healthcare systems with collapse.

The authors of the study will be conducting more research directed at whether balanced diets containing antioxidants (present in colorful foods) have the same effect on ovulation, or whether the balanced nature of whole foods do not interfere but aid in the overall balance of reproductive health, and health in general. I suspect I know the answers to these questions as do you, but we will be more convinced when science says it is so!
Eat better.
