Main Action of Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang
The functions of this TCM herbal formula are to tonify the middle jiao Qi and raise sunken yang. The formula is best suited to treat prolapsed spleen and stomach qi deficiency which leads to middle jiao yang Qi sinking. The flesh is deprived of proper nourishment and becomes flaccid and the body begins to collapse inwards. Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang is one of the most popular formulas used to today in the treatment of prolapsed organs (stomach, uterus, …).
Indications and Symptoms for Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang
intermittent fever, fever aggravated with exertion, spontaneous sweat, aversion to cold, thirsty for warm drinks, shortness of breath, laconic speech, tendency to curl up, weak limbs, shiny pale complexion, loose watery stools, diarrhea
Tongue – pale, thin white coat
Pulse – weak, faint
Herbal Ingredients of Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang
Huang Qi (Radix Astragali Membranaceus, Milk-vetch Root, Astragalus) – 12-24g.
-tonify Qi, raises spleen and stomach yang Qi
Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng, Ginseng Root) – 9-12g.
-tonify spleen Qi
Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractyloids Macrocephaelae, White Atractylodes Rhizome) – 9-12g.
-tonify spleen, dry dampness
Zhi Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis, Licorice Root) – 3-6g.
-tonify Qi, harmonize other herbs within this formula
Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Chinese Angelica Root, tang-kuei) – 6-12g.
-tonify Qi and blood, invigorates blood
Chen Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, Tangerine Peel, Citrus) – 6-9g.
-regulates Qi, aids digestion of other herbs within formula
Sheng Ma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae, Bugbane Rhizome, Cimicifuga) – 3-6g.
-raises sunken yang Qi
Chai Hu (Radix Bupleuri, Hare’s Ear Root, Thorowax Root) – 3-9g.
-raises sunken yang Qi
All the natural herbs within this formula should be ground into a coarse powder and cooked in two bowls of water down to one bowl of water. The strained liquid should be taken warm between each meal. Two to three times more Dang Shen (Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae) is often substituted for Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) due to Ren Shens expense.
